Veteran actress Himani Shivpuri has hinted at why she hasn’t appeared in a Dharma Productions film since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
Reflecting on her career in an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Shivpuri revealed that her “bindaas” comment on the final day of the K3G shoot might have ruffled feathers. Despite enjoying memorable roles in Shah Rukh Khan‘s films, she sensed tension during the casting of Kal Ho Naa Ho, leading her to believe she may have unintentionally upset Karan Johar.

During the final scene of movie, Karan praised Himani, calling her a “lucky mascot” and expressing his pleasure in working with her. Shivpuri, however, suggested that she hoped for a more substantial role in future projects. Later, at a screening, Nikkhil Advani informed her about the upcoming Kal Ho Naa Ho and expressed his desire to have her involved.

Himani recalled requesting a signing amount from Yash Johar, who gave her a single dollar. She instructed her secretary to follow up with Nikkhil Advani, but was informed there were no roles available for her. As more Dharma Productions films came and went without any offers, Shivpuri was left puzzled by the situation.
Shivpuri later encountered Karan Johar at an award show and inquired about why she wasn’t cast in Kal Ho Naa Ho, despite Nikkhil Advani’s initial interest.

KJo responded to Shivpuri’s inquiry by suggesting that the role in Kal Ho Naa Ho wasn’t suitable for her and assured her that she would be contacted for more fitting roles in the future. Shivpuri realized her previous comments might have offended him, marking the end of their collaboration. She expressed regret, reflecting on the fun times they had and their once-close friendship, noting that perhaps they didn’t meet often enough to smooth things over.
In Karan Johar’s debut film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Himani Shivpuri portrayed Riffat Bi, a warden at Kajol’s hostel who helps reunite Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s characters. In Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, she played the role of Haldiram’s wife, portrayed by Johnny Lever.
