Kangana Ranaut recently shared that she almost lost her role in the Mahesh Bhatt produced film Gangster. She revealed that Mahesh Bhatt initially doubted her ability to play the role because he thought she was too young. She recounted how she managed to secure her role in the film even after nearly losing it to Chitrangda Singh.
In an interview with The Lallantop, Kangana explained that Anurag Basu, who had directed the hit film ‘Murder’ before ‘Gangster,’ was searching for a new actress for his upcoming film while she was actively auditioning. She recalled going to their studio in Juhu for the audition, where Anurag informed her that he had received her photos. He then asked her to perform a few tasks, including a drunk scene, showing how she cried, and delivering some dialogues. After completing these tasks, she was sent home.
She continued, “A few days later, I got a call and was told that I had been finalised. Then after a few days, Anurag called me and told me that ‘you have lost the role’. He said that Bhatt Sahab is not agreeing as he thinks that ‘you are too young for this role’. Anurag even said that Chitrangda has been cast for my role.”

She added that a few days later, Anurag called her again and informed her that she had got the role back because Chitrangda was not answering her phone.
The 2006 film Gangster: A Love Story, directed by Anurag Basu and starring Shiney Ahuja and Emraan Hashmi, became a hit. Kangana, who was 20 at the time, won the Best Female Debut award for her performance.

Meanwhile, Kangana’s upcoming film Emergency has faced delays and will not release on September 6 as planned. Our sources have revealed that the film is still awaiting clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has caused the postponement. The certification process may take longer due to the sensitive nature of the film’s content, and a meeting with Kangana and her team is expected soon to discuss the next steps.
